Due to worries over COVID-19, the Free Fire World Series (FFWS) 2021, which was set to take place later in November, has been canceled.
Garena responded in a statement to Dot Esports that everyone’s health and safety is their primary priority. After reviewing all possibilities to protect the health of the Free Fire community, the decision to cancel the event was made.
The World Series is Free Fire’s largest and most thrilling offline esports tournament, according to Garena. “However, rising safety concerns have made it difficult to provide players and fans with a fun but safe offline esports experience.”
The FFWS was supposed to be held in Mexico in November. The Delta form of the coronavirus has generated a third wave of the coronavirus epidemic in the South American country. According to Mexico’s health ministry, 21,250 new cases were reported in the country on August 24.
The FFWS was also canceled last year owing to the epidemic. The Free Fire Continental Series (FFCS) was created to replace the event, which was played online and divided into three regions: EMEA, Americas, and Asia. According to a spokeswoman for Garena, there are “plans for different Free Fire esports events across the world this year” in place of the World Series. Garena looks to be planning other events around the world, although they will not be as large as the FFCS in 2020.
The Free Fire World Series is the highest level of competition in the mobile game, held twice a year. The FFWS was successfully held as an offline tournament in Singapore earlier this year, with 18 teams from around the world participating. Phoenix Force, a Thai team, claimed first place and the lion’s share of the $2 million prize pool.
Correction 26th of August, 11:30 p.m. CT: The World Series was supposed to be hosted in Mexico, according to an earlier version of this page. While there were multiple stories claiming that this was the event’s location, Garena has yet to confirm this. This information has been updated in the article.
